DARJEELING, Aug. 21: Posters signed by the Janta came up at Chowk Bazaar in Darjeeling today expressing the people’s unwillingness to observe tomorrow’s strike convened by the CPRM’s frontal organisations demanding the quick release of Chattray Subba, prime accused in Mr Subash Ghisingh’s assassination attempt case.
Although tourist season in the Hills begins in mid-September, the GJMM has refused to endorse the 12-hour CPRM strike on the ground that such programme would hamper tourism prospects. The party had left the decision up to the general public to make the strike a success claiming it would be a real test of the “Hill people’s consciousness towards human rights issues.”
The poster opposing the bandh read: “Keeping in mind the tourist season and law and order situation in the Hills we will not observe the strike.”
